THE CONSTRUCTION WORK OF DARKHAN LEATHER COMPLEX IS 20% COMPLETE

At the regular Cabinet meeting held on December 23, 2020, the charter of the state-owned limited liability company "Development of Darkhan Leather Complex" was approved. The company is 100 percent state-owned and has one shareholder. Its scope of work includes providing consulting services, raising funds, investing in and managing infrastructure assets. It is estimated that the company's equity consists of 200 million common shares with a par value of MNT 100. The construction of the "Darkhan Leather Complex" is 23% complete. Electricity, heating, steam, and sewage treatment plants have been started by the private sector with loans from the Development Bank. The project will cost over 552 billion MNT.

MET: 8000 HECTARES OF LAND WILL BE REHABILITATED BY THE FUNDS DEPOSITED IN A SPECIAL ACCOUNT

Picture2The Action Plan of the Government of Mongolia includes twelve green-growth activities. One of them is the rehabilitation of areas damaged by mining operations. An organization that has obtained a mining license from the related ministry deposits guarantee funds in a “Special Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation Account” to fulfill its obligations to protect and rehabilitate the environment. In this context, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism stated in its 2020 work report that the money deposited in the account was used for the first time to complete rehabilitation work in Tsenkher soum of Arkhangai aimag in September-November 2020. 8,000 hectares will be rehabilitated with funds from a special account in 2020-2024.

ISSUES RELATED TO WATER CONSTRUCTION AT SELENGE RIVER WATER SUPPLY AREA DISCUSSED Picture3

On December 25, 2020, the ninth meeting of the Joint Commission established by the agreement between the Government of Mongolia and the Government of the Russian Federation on cooperation in the field of environmental protection was held. Also, the third meeting of the joint working group to discuss issues related to the construction of water facilities planned by Mongolia in the Selenge River catchment area was organized online. During the working group meeting, the parties exchanged information on the Regional Environmental Assessment of the Shuren HPP Project, Environmental Impact and Social Impact Assessment, and the progress of additional research on the biodiversity of the Selenge River and Lake Baikal in the Egiin Gol Hydropower Project.

 1ST GROUNDWATER PROJECT EVENT

The Groundwater Project, a non-profit organization, registered in Canada, is committed to contribute to advancement in education by creating and making available online free high-quality groundwater educational material for all. The Groundwater Project is led by Dr. John Cherry, recipient of the 2020 Stockholm Water Prize, and managed by a 11-member international Steering Committee and a larger and globally diverse Advisory Committee. The first ever Groundwater Project Event will be 100% online between the 3rd and 26th of February 2021. A series of meetings and discussions will be promoted, addressing relevant and innovative themes presented by the best references in hydrogeology in the world. 

The event will be broadcasted on the Groundwater Project YouTube channel and the public will be able to interact with the speakers through the live chat. All presentations will be broadcasted in English or with English subtitles.

Our meeting aims to involve the largest global groundwater community in the world! Through our panels and discussions, we will build relationships, share experiences, engage people and learn about groundwater!
