
[Ulaanbaatar, October 9, 2020] – MCA-Mongolia, on October 9, 2020, joined “Housing and Public Utility Workers Day-2020” event jointly organized by the Ministry of Construction and Urban Development and Water Services Regulatory Commission on the occasion of the 89th anniversary of the public utilities sector in Mongolia disseminating information on the Bulk Water Supply Program being implemented under the Mongolia Water Compact to the public.


More than 100 public and private entities working and providing services in the water and public utility sector including in Ulaanbaatar city, took part in the whole day event organized at Sukhbaatar Square under the theme of “Treat the Customers with Respect” with the purpose to furnish the public with information on operations and services of housing and public utilities, including water supply and wastewater collection and treatment services.

The Minister of Construction and Urban Development B.Munkhbaatar, in his opening remarks, congratulated all workers of the housing and public utilities sector and noted “Public utilities should have a unified policy. To this end, the Government policy on the Public Utilities sector has been developed and approved. In accordance with this policy, we are working to improve coordination and cooperation between organizations in the sector to ensure high-quality services, including water supply and sanitation services”. He also underlined that water rate is too low and a tariff increase is necessary to improve water services quality and upgrade infrastructure.
During the event, the participating organizations provided on-site customer services and informed the public about their operations and services while receiving and promptly resolving complaints and comments from the customers to further improve their services. In addition, the public updated their knowledge of drinking water quality and its monitoring, water conservation tips and advices, as well as the government policies and decisions regarding the water services.


MCA-Mongolia is an accountable entity that is implementing the Mongolia Water Compact signed between the Government of Mongolia and the U.S Millennium Challenge Corporation to help to reduce poverty through economic growth in Mongolia.
The Compact is funding the Bulk Water Supply Program which aims to meet ever-increasing demand of in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia through funding the development of two new groundwater wellfields and the construction of an Advanced Water Purification Plant to treat up to 50 million cubic meters/year of water extracted from the new wellfields to the highest drinking water quality standards and supply to the central network of the city, as well as the construction of Wastewater Recycling Plant that will treat 50,000 cubic meters/day of the effluent from new CWWTP and convey the recycled water to Combined Heating and Power plants number three and four (CHP-3 and CHP-4) for technical use. The Compact also includes a Water Sector Sustainability Activity which will enhance the long-term sustainability of UB city water and wastewater system while ensuring that the Compact activities have lasting benefits.
