Open House Event Organized for the Ger Area Smart Water Kiosk Upgrade Project

Ulaanbaatar, June 30, 2023 - The project to automate 180 water kiosks in the ger areas located in 51 khoroos of Ulaanbaatar city’s 6 districts are being implemented under the contract signed between MCA-Mongolia and HTL LLC on January 02, 2023. The project’s objective is to curtail high costs that Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (USUG) bears for providing water through the system of water kiosks in the ger areas of Ulaanbaatar and the automation of 180 water kiosks in the period of two years will result in increased and more convenient access to water in the ger areas.

The Project Supplier HTL LLC has developed the shop drawings and completed preparations to start the kiosk upgrade works in Songinokhairkhan district. Total of 61 kiosks, the majority of the 180 kiosks to be upgraded, are located in 17 khoroos of Songinokhairkhan district and the open house event to introduce the project was organized on Friday, June 30, 2023 outside of the Kiosk 207 in Tolgoit area of the district.

Representatives from the Ulaanbaatar City Mayor’s Office, Millennium Challenge Corporation’s Resident Country Mission, MCA-Mongolia, MCA-Mongolia’s Program Management Consultant Tetra Tech, USUG, HTL LLC and citizens of Songinokhairkhan district’s 2nd khoroo attended the open house event. Mr. Bayaraa, General Manager of Ulaanbaatar city and Head of the Mayor’s Office, Mr. Torkhuu, Chairman of USUG, Mr. Burak Inanc, Deputy Country Director of the MCC, Mr. Mohamed Elshafiy, Program Manager for the MCA-Mongolia’s PMC and Mr. Batzaya, CEO of HTL LLC presented opening remarks.

Information on the project objective, outcomes, and scope of activities were presented afterward and questions from the event guests were answered. Moreover, a sample smart water dispenser was presented publicly and explained by the HTL LLC’s automation engineer Mr. Ayaluun.

About the MCC-Mongolia Water Compact

This $462 million project is a partnership between the American and Mongolian people made possible by $350m in MCC grant funding and the $111.76m contribution from the Government of Mongolia which demonstrates their commitment to working together to achieve economic growth and poverty reduction in Ulaanbaatar. The Mongolia Water Compact is funding major infrastructure projects, including the construction of new wellfields and two large plants - an Advanced Water Purification Plant and Water Recycling Plant which will be the first of their kind in Mongolia. In addition, the Compact will invest in policy measures to create a financially and environmentally sustainable future for the water sector of Ulaanbaatar. As a result, the water system in Ulaanbaatar will have been expanded to deliver 80% more drinking water, allowing for the city’s future expansion.
