
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, August 05, 2022 – MCA-Mongolia Interim CEO D.Enkhjargal visited the Advanced Water Purification Plant (AWPP) construction site, which is being built at the eastern foot of Songinokhairkhan Mountain, with the Compact funding and inspected ongoing works.



During the visit, she held a working meeting with the representatives of the project contractor “MAPA Insaat” company and discussed the progress of the construction work and the challenges facing. MCA-Mongolia Interim CEO inquired about information on purchasing construction materials from the domestic market and emphasized that this effort contributes significantly to the country's economy during this challenging period. She also expressed her willingness to provide support on issues related to transport logistics, border customs, and others to further project work and achieve the Compact objective. At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to cooperate on the dissemination of the contractor and sub-contractors vacancy announcement through the official website and social media channels of the MCA-Mongolia.
The Advanced Water Purification Plant construction is progressing as planned and is expected to be completed in late 2024, and the testing and calibration work will last one year. With the completion of this project, up to 50 million cubic meters of safe and high-quality drinking water will be delivered annually from the AWPP to the central water supply network of UB. By adding up to 60 percent to the city's current water supplies, the construction of downstream wellfields and the AWPP will support the development of sub-cities and new settlement areas in the western region, as outlined in the capital city's master plan, and will create a favorable environment for decentralization.
The project will promote economic growth and contribute to poverty reduction.

This $462 million project is a partnership between the American and Mongolian people made possible by $350m in MCC grant funding and the $111.78m contribution from the Government of Mongolia which demonstrates their commitment to working together to achieve economic growth and poverty reduction in Ulaanbaatar. The Mongolia Water Compact is funding major infrastructure projects, including the construction of new wellfields and two large plants - an Advanced Water Purification Plant and Wastewater Recycling Plant which will be the first of their kind in Mongolia. In addition, the Compact will invest in policy measures to create a financially and environmentally sustainable future for the water sector of Ulaanbaatar. By 2026, the water system in Ulaanbaatar will have been expanded to deliver 80% more drinking water, allowing for the city’s future expansion.
